Lucía Herrero for Time’s Magazine

The TIME Magazine commissioned and published Lucía Herrero’s “Moors and Christians” photographs in 2011 as part of The Travels Through Islam photo essay which is the 5th installment in a five-part series from TIME International’s annual Summer Journey issue.

Lucía went to Mojácar, Andalucía to an enacted 3-day festival where people commemorate the battles between Christians and Muslims from the 8th to the 15th century. They get theatrically dressed accompanied with music, parades, horse competitions and performances.
